Joseph Ajang Barach Ajang Biography

Joseph Ajang Barach Ajang
Executive Director, Kenya
I was born in 1984 in Kongor, Jonglei State, Twic East County, South Sudan, I was raised in a strong Christian family that instilled in me the values of faith, integrity, and compassion. My upbringing emphasized the importance of upholding high moral values and advocating for the fear of God. Growing up in a remote rural setting, I was deeply connected to nature and community life, engaging in fundamental activities such as herding cattle and fishing. These experiences taught me resilience and self-sufficiency and ingrained in me a sense of responsibility towards my family and community.
Education and Professional Development
My academic journey began at Fuji Primary School, where I studied from 2006 and successfully earned the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE). Determined to advance my education, I proceeded to Monar House High School, where I completed my studies and obtained the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
Understanding the importance of higher education in shaping my future, I enrolled at the Eldoret College of Professional Studies (ECPS College), where I pursued a Diploma in Human Resource Management (HRM). This course equipped me with essential skills in organizational leadership, employee relations, and strategic planning.
In addition to my HRM studies, I also hold a certificate in Health Care, which has strengthened my knowledge of public health, community health care management, and emergency response. Furthermore, I successfully completed a three-month course in computer application packages, which enhanced my digital literacy and ability to work with modern technology in professional settings.
Professional Experience and Leadership
Over the years, I have accumulated vast experience in different sectors, ranging from healthcare to community leadership and humanitarian work. My professional journey has been shaped by my passion for service and dedication to improving the lives of those in need. Some of the key roles I have undertaken include:
- General Services at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH)
- Health Care Supervisor at Kakuma Refugee Camp
- Voluntary Coordinator at Xavier Organization (COHERE) – I played a crucial role in coordinating volunteer programs, community outreach initiatives, and capacity-building projects aimed at supporting vulnerable groups.
- Community Leader at Twic East Community in Eldoret – As a leader, I have been instrumental in organizing community meetings, mediating disputes, and fostering unity among South Sudanese residents in Eldoret.
- Kongor Youth Leader in Kakuma Refugee Camp – This position allowed me to mentor and empower young people, guiding them toward education, skills development, and positive community engagement.
- Founder of Amot Girls Foundation – Passionate about gender equality and education, I established the Amot Girls Foundation to support underprivileged girls in South Sudan and Kenya. Through this foundation, I advocate for girls’ education, women’s empowerment, and access to health services.
Commitment to Advocacy and Humanitarian Work
Having been born and raised in Kongor, Jonglei State, I have firsthand knowledge of the social, economic, and health challenges faced by my community, particularly by women and girls. From an early age, I observed the struggles of mothers, sisters, and daughters in my village—many of whom lacked access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. These realities ignited in me a strong desire to be a voice for the voiceless and to work toward sustainable solutions that improve lives.
Through my leadership roles and humanitarian efforts, I have actively engaged in initiatives that promote:
- Girls’ Education and Women’s Empowerment – Ensuring that young girls have access to quality education, mentorship, and vocational training opportunities.
- Health and Hygiene Programs – Advocating for better healthcare services, maternal health programs, and hygiene awareness campaigns to improve overall well-being.
- Refugee Support and Community Development – Working with displaced populations, providing humanitarian aid, and promoting peacebuilding efforts among South Sudanese communities in Kenya and beyond.
Vision for the Future
My ultimate goal is to continue building strong networks of support for marginalized communities, particularly women and children. I envision a future where every girl in South Sudan and refugee settlements has the opportunity to receive an education, every family has access to healthcare, and every individual is empowered to contribute to society.
As a firm believer in faith, resilience, and collective action, I remain committed to mobilizing resources, inspiring young leaders, and advocating for policies that uplift vulnerable populations. By working together, I believe we can transform lives and create a society rooted in justice, equality, and opportunity for all.
